Tips to Improve Handwriting

We all want our handwriting to be legible and neat at a minimum. If you are looking to improve your handwriting, this post is for you. Below are a few tips to improve lettering and neatness of handwriting. Some additional tips are available on my Instagram post.

1. Spacing

Spacing between words and letters in a word need to be consistent. Keep the space between words larger than the spacing between letters in the word. An easy way to do this is, keep a pencil head distance between words and keep all the letters in a word close together but not close enough to overlap or touch each other.

2. Slant

You may choose to slant your writing to either right or left, or keep it upright. Always slant every letter to the same side or always consistently maintain it upright. A combination of slants to different sides and upright, looks very messy and cluttered.

3. Consistent formation of letters

Keep all the letters in the same size. Capital letters must be slightly taller than the other letters which are non-capitalized. Keep all the ascenders at the same height and all the descenders at the same level.

4. Complete letter formation

Do not write partially complete letters as they can be misinterpreted as some other letter/symbol. Always complete writing a letter/alphabet before writing the next one.

5. Write in a straight line

You can use the lines in a notebook to guide your writing. While practising writing, preferably use ruled paper. Writing on a straight line for day to day purposes looks very neat and makes the reading easy.

6. Practise writing fast and slow

Many people recommend to start writing slow at first, master your legible and neat handwriting by writing slow and then try and increase your pace. I would not recommend this. I suggest to practise writing both- fast and slow and analyze your writing in both cases and progressively make improvements. It is difficult to pick up pace if you get habituated to writing slow.

Hope you find these tips helpful.
